Stay or Leave

Image
Should it freeze in place or flee is the question rabbits must decide quickly. When danger is perceived, rabbits either stay motionless, hoping the predator doesn’t see them, or quickly hop to safety. Well, one time, Rusty did both. On September 6th, 2025, Rusty let me get within 3 feet of him near the edge of the driveway. Yay, this Eastern Cottontail let me get within 3 feet of him again! That would enable me to take tight close-ups of him, but that was a short lived event. Earlier I noticed about six to eight boys, ages eight to ten, were loudly running around the neighborhood. Suddenly yelling, the boys turned into my driveway and proceeded to scamper up it. That caused Rusty to flee and me to run to the top of my driveway. I screamed repeatedly at the boys to leave, that this was my home, my property, not their’s. They halted as soon as they heard me. A father soon drove up. He ordered them to leave and return to a house. They did. Later I learned they were attending a party. When...

Rabbits Preening and Looking Coquettish

Image
Preening rabbits can be engrossing to watch. They’re fastidious as they lick their paws to scrub their faces and bodies. They preen after eating and sometimes before they nod off and when they wake. You’ve heard of cat naps. Well, there are short rabbit naps. The naps could be as short as a couple of minutes. Sometimes rabbits look coquettish. I’ve tried to photograph them cleaning their ears. When backlit, the veins are faintly visible through glowing, pinkish skin, the ears edged in brightly lit fur. Kogarana’s Bunny Popo is adorable to watch online. She’s an intelligent affectionate, domestic rabbit with a big personality. The owner states she’s a Netherland Dwarf, but she doesn’t have the “smooshed dome head” of that breed. She’s much prettier. Her profile is closer to a cottontail. Sometimes Popo looks like a coquette. Subjectively, not all breeds are cute, but all can be funny. In a 12 minute video, Kogarana compiled clips over a 3 year period of Popo and Pete the Cat . It conta...

First Rabbits of Spring

Image
There they were, calmly munching on grass over a block away from home. They were my first sighting of rabbits this spring. Even yards away on the sidewalk, it was clear they were adults. I spotted them during a walk at 9:35 AM on March 26, 2026. Unfortunately, I only had my cell phone with me. It has a bad zoom, but I couldn’t resist taking a photo of them.  During five months of snow, rabbit tracks and spoor were the only evidence of rabbits. Occasionally we saw them in the dark. One night, through my kitchen window, I watched a rabbit gnaw at a hedge branch till it broke off. That rabbit ate the bark till it was satiated before it hopped out of sight. M

Popo the bunny

We have been enjoying the Japanese Youtube channel KOGARANA's Bunny Popo . Great videos include: Bunny cuisine , Japanese style, is very impressive (or, because it's dumplings, is it also Chinese?) Birthday bunny wants more sweets , won't stop ringing bell It's a challenge to get Popo into the carrier to go get her nails cut . Those leg flicks at about 1:15 are the strongest words on the rabbit language (and perhaps evidence in favor of Chomsky's argument that language is innate , not taught) Popo and her cat friend Pete are lovely together A bunny and her slide

Rabbits of YouTube

Here are some of the rabbit videos we have enjoyed.  TheDodo channel features heartwarming videos about animals. Here is a delightful one about a rabbit:  Lady Rescues A Newborn Rabbit And Raises Her Until She's Ready To Be Wild The channel OneMorePlease features two rabbits that are extremely smart but the owners are not always nice. The videos we like include: Sleeping rabbit wakes up at the sound of a banana which shows how expressive rabbits can be without speaking -- using their body language and their eyes and ears to express themselves Is a RABBIT as smart as a DOG? -- in which the rabbit, Pigpoke, demonstrates intelligence not so much by solving a dog intelligence toy but by reading and understanding nonverbal cues from the human The channel  Jabba The Rabbit features a large female rabbit called Jabba and her small male companion called Solo. They are very cute together, as in  Giant Rabbit vs. Lop “Love Dance” in Our Living Room! (Bunny Love Behaviors...

18” of snow? What’s a Rabbit to do?

Image
In January we had heavy snow falls and frigid weather. Snow in our backyard measured at least 18” in height. So, I confined my shoveling to sidewalks and paths to our doors. Despite the lack of a path through our yard, it didn’t stop one intrepid rabbit. It traversed the yard. The average weight of a cottontail is 2.5 pounds. The jumping bunny sunk into powdery snow. Cottontail shoulder height is about 7” to 9”. The rabbit had to leap high to clear the snow. That height didn’t enable it to hop far horizontally. A deep, closely spaced line of tracks was created. That night, I photographed the trail. A few days later, after another snowfall, a new set of tracks appeared in the expanse of snow. Rabbit tracks in deep snow Traces of rabbits are erased by layers of flakes. Sometimes we obliterate the imprints with boots and shovels. Cold bright sunshine slowly evaporates the snow, softening the edges of paw prints. But, after a few weeks, the deep tracks are still visible as the thick layer ...
